Meditation is the natural state of mind when it is relaxed, stable, and open.
When our mind is calm and settled, there is a spaciousness that allows time between action and reaction. The trouble is that the mind more frequently runs wild like a monkey. That is what happens when the mind is too agitated, wound up, or out of control. The mind controls you rather than the other way around. The point of meditation is to create space in your mind. The mind is like a muscle. In the same way that you do physical fitness training to keep your body strong, the mind needs to be trained to be calm and relaxed, yet also alert and wakeful. For Buddhists, meditation is the means by which to experience wisdom directly.
LEARN HOW TO MEDITATE
The Tonglen Meditation is a Tibetan Buddhist practice for overcoming the fear of suffering and for dissolving the tightness of our heart. Primarily it is a method for awakening the compassion that is inherent in all of us.
Teaching on Shinay meditation led by Tibetan Lama Tulku Tsori Rinpoche. As taught in the Tibetan tradition, meditation has two stages. The first is called in Sanskrit, shamata or in Tibetan, shinay. Shiné or shinay means restful or relaxed or "tranquility meditation" -- "resting in naturalness," "calm abiding." We talk about shinay, the shinay is a kind of foundation for meditation practice because if we don't develop quietness somehow we can't really do any kind of meditation because if we want to make a good painting we must have a clean canvas so we can make the creation on top of it. Like that if our mind is complicated and disturbed it is very difficult to work until it so the first step for entire meditation practice is to develop the state of quietness, calmness the togetherness.
